Finding the Right Place - You Might Be Surprised

You've probably read a lot of articles and even whole books on the subject of finding the right place to homestead.

Usually those books begin with a lot of good advice on things like access to water, good soil, land taxes, utilities, natural resources that may be important in the future, the potential for wind energy or solar and a long checklist of other things. Like I said, there's a lot of good advice to consider in those books, when looking for that perfect homestead.

I've got several books that have offered up some great advice like that listed above, books that I enjoy perusing.  But I have to be honest that they have been of limited help to me in the long run.  Let me share with you why I make that statement.  As I began to read about finding the perfect homestead, looking at the checklists, making my own checklist, I started to see "the simple life" moving further and further out of my reach.  I mean, let's face it, if I had the goats, maybe a pig or two, rabbits, chickens and honey bees, I'd need at LEAST a bare minimum of 10 acres of land to grow the hay I needed.  When I factored in that I was planning on burning wood to heat with, I needed another 10 acres, according to the many different voices in the discussion. The land needed to be perfectly fertile with good drainage oriented on slope that faced south with a ridge that had the right readings for a wind turbine, a spring, a flowing stream, a pond of 2 acres and all be surveyed and cross-fenced.

Some Things I Want To Tell The Summer-Me

Here it is, a little past what I would call mid-winter. I know, I know, spring is only a month away by calendar, but for us it a bit further away by way of the weather. So as the days are getting notably longer and the visions of seedlings are dancing in my head, I didn't want to get so caught up in those thoughts that I forget a few things about our first winter here on the hill. So the winter-me is going to send a note to the summer-me. Dear Summer-Bob, I just wanted to say hello from the depths of the snow and the winter. It was a nice winter day today, with some snow and then later in the day a treat. Sunshine. I know it's easy to get discouraged there in the heat with all the humidity, high temperatures and sweat (and I know how you sweat). I know it's also easy to so caught up with what you're working on right now to put aside some of the other things that you know, back in the recesses of your head, need done.
