If you are seeing this message, it's because you are either a first-time visitor, you are not a member or you are not logged in. In any case, take a moment, register (it's FREE) and login. You won't be sad you did. I hope to create a community of free flow information for all homesteader's or homesteader want-to-be's. I haven't met anyone who has it all figured out yet and knows it all, but together we can share knowledge, success and failures... and maybe, just maybe make a few friends in the process. Check out the forums and keep your eye out on the download section for free software!

It started as a dream for MOST of us, so don't feel bad if that's the stage you are in, just come aboard and learn and share what you can!

Thanks for stopping by!

Build Your Own Greenhouse for around $140.00
Greenhouse PictureWe've just recently finished (well 90%, because do you EVER really finish a project?) the greenhouse addition.  We spent $100.00 to do it, but had some of the electric plastic conduit sitting around. I figure you should be able to build this for around $140.00.
We've got a lot to learn about growing in the greenhouse, but I must say that we love it so far. We've had nights in the 20° range but no freezing in the greenhouse yet.  We haven't supplemented any heat to it as of yet (beside the heat that escapes when we go into it from the house.

Read all about the build over here.

Make Your Own Spiedies!
Member Katlupe has posted a very interesting article on Spiedies (I've not heard of them before) check it over in the Homesteading How-to area.

Once you get hooked up making your spiedies you will want to make them all the time. Now you can even buy spiedie subs or spiedie pizza around here. Almost all bars sell them as they are quick to make and easy to store or sell. A great way to use your wild game or even your home grown livestock meats.

Here is something new to barbecue on the grill next summer or even this winter. It's also a good way to use up all that venison you haven't eaten yet. Spiedies are the specialty of Broome County in upstate New York. I promise, that you will get plenty of raves from family and friends! Spiedies are marinated cubes of meat and served on fresh italian bread.

In our area, you can walk into practically all the restaurants or taverns and order a spiedie sandwich or sub. They are served at all our outdoor events. And in fact, every August, we have a huge festival called a Spiedie Fest. The main event, of course, is the spiedie cooking contest. Everybody has their favorite recipe. Besides somebody has to eat all those spiedies!

My 401K (New Chicken Tractor)
Read about my new Chicken Tractor. I call it my 401K, because it's my investment.  Stocks soar, stocks crash, but chickens keep laying eggs.

401K Chicken Tractor

You can build your own 401K using materials around your house.  All the wood was stuff I had laying around (What, you don't have any lumber laying around?  Why not? Get on Freecycle and Craigslist and get busy) and the poultry netting was from a roll I bought a year ago.

One of the most expensive things I bought were the two sets of hinges. The prices of hinges has really soared recently.  That said... even I make mistakes... I didn't look around enough. I found an old table with fold up wings... 4 hinges that I could have had for free (well, I still have them techinically) but I didn't have to purchase the ones I bought for the 401K).

I am for it, it's an evil necessity

I am for it because I believe it will help.

I am against it, let it all crash.

I am against it, but we need to do something.
